Thinking about the interior of my building- Drawing & Google sketch up

As well as thinking about how the exterior of the house would look, I began thinking about how the interior would look, by doing some simple sketches in my sketch book and on seperate sheets of paper this helped develop my ideas, I used paint to map out some of my thoughts about how the rooms could be layed  at a starting point.

Idea for lounge, sofas the central part of the room, social area

Kitchen, table central part of the room, with dividers to suggest the seating area is the main focus

I began to think about the kitchen, there were different colour schemes I could of had in the room, although I found by using red, black and white this would create an interesting and appealing space. I began designing mood boards both for the kitchen and the lounge, by doing this I could see what the furniture and the colour scheme would be like, although I could nto see where the objects would be placed or what the room would look like properly.

Kitchen
After coming to a decision about the colour scheme, I began to design the layout of the kitchen, I began to use Google Sketch Up for this, before begginning this course, I had never thought about using Google Sketch Up as part of a project, although I found this program very interesting and useful in my design approach. By using the building tools I began to design a traingle room, i thought about how the space could be used and occupied. I thought about how the kitchen is the heart of a home and how this would appeal to older and younger generations.

Bathroom
When designing the bathroom, I came to a decision about the colour scheme, I thought brown and cream would work well, I thought about using a wooden floor for the bathroom, which would be bamboo, after researching different flooring I found bamboo was the most sustainable along with cork. I also used Google Sketch Up on my bathroom, this way I could get a feel of what the room would look like and how the different objects could be layed out. I also thought of how the bathroom would look modern and would appeal to both the younger and older generations.

Bedroom
Before designing the bedroom I thoguht about what colour scheme would look fresh and appealing in a room, i thought about using a feature wall of turquoise and 2 cream walls. By doing this this added colour to the room. I used Google Sketch Up to help me see where the furniture would look right, I looked on the paint maps which I did earlier and ensured the bed was the central part to the room by putting it in the corner with furniture around it. I found by doing so other objects like a circular chair fir in well with the room.

Lounge 
When designing the lounge I foudn the main focus for me was the sofas in the middle of the room, by putting round sofas in a circle in the centre of the room this ensured the room would be a social area and a relaxing area to sit. I found by using brown and cream this lifted the room and looked warmer. I started using google sketch up to find a few suitable chairs which would fit in with my design, I found two arched chairs which worked in the centre of the room. By doing this I found I could arrange more furniture around the chairs and even put a table in the middle of them.

Interior Design- Housing Concept

I was asked to design an idea for a show home, taking into consideration the layout and design of the exterior and interior. I was asked to produce visual research, drawings which have been developed, the use of space in the room, mood boards to show my ideas and to take into account colour, style, textures and furnishings.
     I began to design a building which would fit in with the design brief, I began with a square building, and thought about how different parts of the building could be cut out or have a window in it. I then thought about how the house could be on stilts, therefore the garden would be larger and could go under the house as well as around the house. I thought about different window designs and large, small and different shapes for windows.With these ideas in hand I began to produce several A1 sheets of developing ideas for my house.

 To further the design I thought about how the rooms could all be seperate and how one room could be one house, therefore the rooms would have more light and more space and the space could be used better. The rooms would be seperated by walkways with a overhead cover (which would be ideal for miserable weather) leading towards the different rooms. I began to draw walkways and different ways the buildings could be angled in which the houses would link together.I also thought about how the windows would work and whether enough natural light was being created in the room.
 I then thought of how by spliting the rooms up into buildings, I could use that idea to cut a square diagnol to create a triangle shape which would suggest it was half of a building and would match the idea of rooms connected by walkways. I then began to design an interesting concept of how a triangle building would look good from the outside and also look stylish in the interior. By using a triangle room the use of space in the interior was important, as the room was half the size of the previous square building, the interior has less space and a difficult shape which would need to be designed well. After looking at this, I began to think about windows, I designed triangle windows which would fit in with the design of a triangle house, although i thought one window was not enough, i then thought about using a rectangle window underneath the triangle to add more light to the room but to also look like a show home. I then came up with a model of 4 triangle houses, joined together by walkways and on stilts so the garden was large and exposed.

Circle perspects and wire design

After producing my wire structures, I decided to explore perspects and wire together, at first I began to draw three circles and looked at how wire could be added to the circles, I thought about using chicken wire although when i tryed to put it through the perspects I found the chicken wire could not go through the holes I had drilled, I then thought about using thin silver wire, I found this wire went through the holes and fitted securly, I began to draw more wire through the three circles, and thought about how the design could stand, I thought about using one of the circles as a base, although I found putting all three circles on their side worked well from a design approach. Using sand paper I then began to sand the edges of the circles making usre thedges remained straight but became smooth, I then used the buffing machine to touch up the edges of the design ensuring it looked to the best possible standard. I began to drill holes into the perspects and then began to put the wire inbetween the three circles. After making this design, I found this design could be a sculpture or an ornament for an interior, the sleek and modern style would look bold in a interior.

Second week of mapping

For the second week of mapping, we had to map the journey of our lives, by doing so we had to use different materials and different methods which were personal and individual to us. By layering my drawing I found this produced interesting marks on the paper about how my life has been planned out. By drawing and layering this showed the history of my drawing and the earlier marks that have been drawn over by more recent experiences.

Wire structures

After exploring wood to produce designs, I then looked at Jeroen Molenaara's lamp, I found the shapes in his lamp interesting in the sharpness and the different directions the shapes are going. Molenaara's lamp portrays elegance in the way some of his lamp is covered and some is not, by doing so the lamp appears more interesting and expressive. This lamp is inspiring in the way it would be a feature of an interior rather than just an object, its boldness and simplicity would add style to an interior. I then produced several sketches of different shapes and lines I could encorporate into a wire structure, I produced 15 designs. After producing these designs, I began to use line to draw a idea of the wire structure, by suing different materials and methods this allowed me to express my ideas and understand how this design could be achieved. I then chose to use a strong metal wire and bend this wire with pliars to make sure the wire achieved the best possible outcome. I then began to weld the metal together to create a design which incorporated a busy style but also a simple style with the use of just one material. Half way through i thought about making the structure higher which would make more of an impact on the style of the design, after this was achieved I had to ensure the structure was upright and secure, I then began to add straight pieces of metal inbetween the bended wire, this encountered my problem of the structure falling over, the main problems when manufacturing this structure were that the structure was not able to stand up at one point, I overcome this problem by thinking of a solution and then acting upon that solution.

After working in the sketchbook and producing some sketches of my model, I then began to use chicken wire to produce a sketch of the wire structure and to add more 3D styles to my sketchbook. After using the chicken wire, I found I could untwist the wire to create a deconstructed effect, I thought about how the chicken wire could be deconstructed from a normal shape chicken wire, I then began to make a design of chicken wire leading into an deconstrcuted effect, after making this model, I then cut out some more chicken wire and made a cylinder with the chicken wire, I then  began to deconstruct the outside and top of the cylinder, to produce a design to show how an object can be deconstructed and look completely different in composition and also in space. After producing these designs it explored my imagination and made me understand more materials which could be used further on in my designs. After producing my structures, I began to reflect on what I could do different if I were to make these again, I would wear gloves when deconstructing the chicken wire as it scratched and scraped my hands, i would also make a larger version as I believe this would produce a very interesting structure for a interior if it were to be arranged as though it was emerging from a wall.

First week of Drawing and Mapping

For the first week of mapping, we looked at real life maps to get inspiration, I looked at the detail which was within the maps, whilst maps are for us to find our ways around, there are also all kinds of maps including: Sound maps, memory maps, mapping journeys etc... for our first task we drew our own maps by using letter forms, this reminded me of the first week of college when we used letter forms to create structures. By using letters I created my own imaginary map, this included dark lines, thin lines, shapes and many curves. I produced a series of these maps which helped me to explore my imagination and create my own personal map. I drew out the maps in pen and pencil, I then photocopied these onto black paper which made them look more interesting.

After producing a design to do with curves and bends, I then decided to focus on the idea of creating a shape with blocks of wood, by drawing identically sized squares onto pine wood, using the band saw I then cut out the squares evenly, after doing so using the sanding machine I sanded the blocks down to create a smooth edge and a professional finish to the cubes.

 After producing a series of seperate blocks of wood, I then decided to arrange them and glue gun them into a structural form. I encounted some problems with attaching the wood together, although I got past the problems and I ensured the design was professional and steady. I then arranged the blocks of wood up against a corner of a wall, this created a design which could make the wall stand out.

3D Design- Inspiration from gallery visits

After producing the first structure to do with the shapes of buildings, I decided to alter the design style, I decided to use curves in the design rather than straight lines, I began drawing ideas of how the design could look, I thought about using the same design and just changing the straight corners into bends, although I found I could produce a different design, still focusing on space and buildings but using more bends, I found by using pliars and wood i could bend the wood into curves to produce an interesting structure. Using a glue gun, I then began to attach each piece of wood together to create a representation of my first structure although in a curvy form. I found this method of using wood was challenging as the wood was able to break easily when using the pliars, although it worked well in the way it created an interesting form in the different ways it could bend.

3D Design- Inspiration from gallery visits

I visited the CUBE gallery in Manchester in order to look at work and understand the way space can be used. I found looking at the architecture work, the work was very intricate and detailed but also the designs looked modern and contemporary. We were asked to produce an outcome in response to the work we had seen at the gallery visits, after drawing ideas, i found if I drew a 3D rectangle and cut out shapes I could make the rectangle into different buildings, I looked at the way the buildings use space and create space. I began to draw my architectural study which I was inspired to do by the CUBE gallery visit. After drawing my design, I began to use pine, this wood is easy to saw and sand down and when finished creates a simplistic but attractive finish. When cutting out the wood, I began to use the glue gun to attach each piece of wood together, the glue gun worked well as it ensured my structure stayed attached.After attacching each piece of wood, I then added string to the design, this created different space between each building and showed the attachment of each building to the other.

Measuring and understanding space

Exercise 1- My first exercise from 'Drawing and Measurement', I was able to make judgements on space between one object in relation to another. By arranging different plinths and a photoframe into an interesting composition, I thought about using horizontal, vertical and diagnol lines by using plinths to create these concepts. After arranging the plinths, I then added string, by adding string from the plinths to the floor, wall and other plinths I found this created different sizes of space between each plinth, by linking the corner of one plinth to another this created an obstruction and an interesting way to create space. Using tracing paper and pencil, I then began to draw paying attention to the weight, length and line of the string. After producing 2 of these fromn different angles, I then decided to pay attention to the negative space between the plinths and the string, using pencil and pen I mapped out the negative space. I did this from different angles to create different outcomes.
