Measuring and understanding space

Exercise 1- My first exercise from 'Drawing and Measurement', I was able to make judgements on space between one object in relation to another. By arranging different plinths and a photoframe into an interesting composition, I thought about using horizontal, vertical and diagnol lines by using plinths to create these concepts. After arranging the plinths, I then added string, by adding string from the plinths to the floor, wall and other plinths I found this created different sizes of space between each plinth, by linking the corner of one plinth to another this created an obstruction and an interesting way to create space. Using tracing paper and pencil, I then began to draw paying attention to the weight, length and line of the string. After producing 2 of these fromn different angles, I then decided to pay attention to the negative space between the plinths and the string, using pencil and pen I mapped out the negative space. I did this from different angles to create different outcomes.

SQUARE-ISH STILL LIFE

Using a grid, I chose interesting objects and began placing objects behind it, I placed the objects at different distances behind the grid. I then bagan to draw and measure the grid on a piece of paper, once the grid was complete and accurate, I then began to place each object onto the grid on my paper using charcoal. By using a grid this ensures a clear guide to where each object is positioned. After outlining each object I then went on to include tone, texture, scale, pattern and surface in which to make the object 3D on the page and also to make sure each object was accurately lined up. I shaded and drew in black and white, by using charcoal this allowed me to show texture and also to show the shades of the objects from light shining onto them. I founds using charcoal allowed me to experiment more with different textures and if I were to make mistakes they were easy to correct. I found this project helped me to learn more about different tones and mark-making with charcoal, I found using charcoal easier and this project helped me to learn this.

Using the photo-copier, I copied the completed drawing onto an A3 sheet. I then folded the sheet to create squares and cut into the squares ensuring the image does not cut into two pieces. After producing a long sheet off my image, I then arranged this into an interesting concept in which some of the squares could be seen and some of the squares were hidden.

After producing this arrangement I then drew this onto a new sheet of paper, this allowed me to see images in different aspects rather than just 2D drawings. This project helped me to understand different ways to approach drawing instead of just drawing an image on a piece of paper, I learnt how to use a grid to get a more accurate image. I considered using colour although I found that charcoal created the texture and tone which I needed andby using black and white it allowed me to use shade easily.

Combined media, fashion & textiles

On approach to the Drawing and Light section,  using a series of acetate images I had picked out, I layered them onto an overhead projector, by doing this I could see the images clearly on the wall. By using different marks, I began to produce a mark-making drawing of the images on the overhead-projector. Without focusing on the outline of the image, by using marks it allows you to draw freely and have a range of marks.

Approaching different images I then produced a different design,

After producing these two designs, I began producing a series of small studies from these images, by using string, wire, material and hot wax. By using a view finder,  I produced different studies with different materials. By doing this I was more creative in the materials I used and the way I presented them.

After making a series of small studies from my larger studies, using a soldering iron I burnt throught some of my designs, this added more depth and more interesting marks to my designs. After producing my studies, I then arranged them one by one on to an over-head projector, this transfered light through the imagery and created interesting pieces.

After producing this work, I developed a more expressive approach to my art work, by using different materials and burning it allowed me to be more creative and think about which materials work together and which materials don't work well together.

LETTERS AND LINE

By using letters we had to make use of line and form, these letters could be considered in 3D, 2D, different angles, broken letters. I would then produce different compositions using the letters. I chose to use a 3D form on my first piece, by constructing the letters at angles this produced a structured composition, i chose to work in pencil and pen for this as by not using detail this became a structured line drawing which showed the letters in their 3 dimensional form. For my first design I decided to use a simple ABC design, by changing the angles of the different letters and arranging them in a perspective, I found I was thinking more about the structure of the design as a whole, different letters different ways incorporates line into the design which is helpful when designing the structure of a building or designing the interior of a house. I decided to keep the colour scheme for this design as black and white but making lines thick or thin or blocking in the letter. By thinking about line this helped me to think about the structure and perspective of a piece of art work, I will use this in my studies further on to help my designs look more 3D or realistic.

I then went on to work into my art book producing more smaller scale studies, I began working in black and white which produced some good outcomes, where i thought out space and line in the design, I then went on to work in colour and produced some small scale colour studies using different letters as opposed to A, B and C. I found by working with letters that i produced some outcomes which thought about line and proportion, this kind of drawing I was not used to, but after trying it out I found it interesting and I will carry on using the technique.

Once we had used limited materials (pen, pencil, card), I then went on to produce smaller scale studies using wallpaper, patterned paper, string and other materials, I found the studies had more variety to them as I was using more materials, although I still maintained the line and structure of the design.

WRAP IT UP

During the first week, our next brief was 'WRAP IT UP' , we were asked to choose different objects and wrap them up in different materials which were provided. This could be done by choosing individual objects or choosing multiple objects and wrapping them in order to create a different structure. I chose a mannequin, a brush and a 3D star shape. I chose the mannequin as the arm was missing, I then thought about how I could replace this arm. By using a brush the mannequin looked irregular but creative. I then used the 3D star to add another body part onto the mannequin. After using these dissimilar objects, the piece was then wrapped up in white fabric, parcel tape and garden wire, I chose to use these materials as the idea of 'WRAP IT UP' was to create form, structure and texture, by using different materials the different textures became interesting. Also by using three disimilar objects, I managed to create one object which fitted well together. I found this task interesting in the way you could approach it, I found myself using objects I would never use in art, and I found that these objects worked to express imagination.

After completing the wrapping, I was then asked to 'unwrap', by unwrapping my object I had to retain the quality of the materials although by unwrapping the object I found this created unique textures and marks in which the different materials had made. I then arranged these on the wall to create a composition and a pattern of different textures and materials. I found by doing this project I had more of an understanding of different materials and the marks in which they make in time.

Induction week

As we started off our first week of our Art Foundation course, our first brief stated that we would respond in our own expressive way to music. In my own interpretation i produced a few studies of imaginative designs which stretched my imagination and allowed me to be more expressive in the way I work. I enjoyed the openness of the brief in a way which I could explore and interact with the music in my own way.

By listening to different ranges of soft and loud music, the strokes of media became thick and heavy for the loud music, and the strokes of media for softer music became much more softer toned and more intricate designs. By mixing both loud and soft music it enabled me to produce work which had mixed tones and became an intricate and expressive piece.

After producing work, we then created posters with the title 'Soundscapes the Art of Music' by selecting a section of my work and zooming in this became the central part of my poster. By creating a poster this helped me to express art in a different way, normally I approach my work in a more neater way, this allowed me to open up and realise sometimes work is more about expression and imagination.
